The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the repertoire of Macedonia, a region that lies primarily in Greece, North Macedonia and Bulgaria. We will focus on the music of Greek Macedonia, which is distinctly different from other musical styles of Greece.
One aim of this course is to incorporate instruments that aren’t typical to Macedonian music, and thus, we welcome all instrumentalists. This course is for students who are comfortable on their instruments, and thus able to focus on repertoire and more subtle stylistic details. We will approach this tradition through its modal system, and analyze it via its relationship with neighboring traditions. We will not be using scores, but rather learn through imitation and repetition.
