Learn the fundamental bowing and phrasing techniques used in Middle Eastern modal musical traditions. In this course, we will will listen to, analyze, sing, play and improvise on various pieces of Turkish (Ottoman) Makam and Azeri Mugam. These will include the huseyni makam and the kargihar makam. We will then explore the Azeri mugam, which will be taught by ear. This will include the shur mugam, which is one of the main modes of Azerbaijani music. The course is suitable for Western classical musicians looking for an introduction to modal music. It is also relevant to string players familiar with modal traditions (lyra, kemençe, kamanche, yaylı tanbur) who want to dive deeper into makam.

Student requirements:
Instrumental technique: intermediate
Western theory: basic
Modal music theory: any level
Sight reading: basic
Transposition: any level
Learning by ear: basic
Composition: any level
Improvisation: any level

Class Schedule

In case a class is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, an additional make-up class will take place at the same time on Thursday following the last day of classes.
