Description
NOTE: This course, “Classical Ottoman Singing,” will be taught in Turkish, with live translation to English.
This course will focus on the Ottoman vocal tradition. We will work on developing correct technique, pronunciation and familiarity with stylistic elements through the practice of a selected repertoire. The teaching style of this course will emulate the traditional meşk system, meaning that familiarity will be developed through repetition, observation and imitation of the instructor. It will be taught in Turkish with English translation.
This course is for students who are already comfortable vocalists and familiar with fundamental vocal techniques. The repertoire, focused around the makam Rast, will vary slightly depending on the pace and general level of the class. Additionally, we may practice Gazel, which is improvised solo singing. The repertoire will likely include:
1. “Rast Beste: Ger tîğ-i bâred der kûy-i an mah” by Acemler
2. “Rast Ağır Semâî : Hevây-ı aşkına şahım düşürdüm bu dil-i zârım” by Nailçezade Mehmed
3. “Rast Yürük Semâî: Bir yüzden idi yar ile üslûb-ı mehabbet” by Hâfız Şeyda
4. “Rast Beste: Hem kamer hem zühre vü hem” by Acemler
5. “Rast Ağır Semâi: Saki parıldasın şefâk-ı meyyile camımız” by Münir Nurettin
6. “Rast Yürük Semâî: Dikkatler ile seyrederiz yari serapa” by Bâki
7. “Rast İlâhi: çün doğup tuttu cihanı” by Itrî
8. “Rast İlâhi Çünki bildin müminin kalbinde Beytullah var”
