Description
This course will focus on the ney, the end-blown reed flute key to certain musical traditions of Turkey, Iran and the Arab world. We will concentrate on the basics of the instrument, learning how to produce sound, how to properly position your fingers on the instrument, and review the main modes (makamlar), learning to play simple melodies. We will approach technical issues such as maintaining balance through different harmonic registers, breath control, dynamic expression, microtone intonation and control, head movement, and the relationship of the instrument with the voice. This aims to help students capture the expressiveness of the ney and its flexible timbre and intonation. We will play pieces from Ottoman, Mevlevi, Turkish, and Greek repertoires.
