Alexandros Papadimitrakis studied oud and lavta with Yurdal Tokcan, Sokratis Sinopoulos, Christos Tsiamoulis, Nikos Grapsas & Haig Yazdjian. He is a graduate of University of Athens-Department of Music and holds a MMus degree from Codarts Rotterdam University for the Arts.
Since 2003, he has attended several workshops at Labyrinth Music in Crete, Lefkada & Catalunya with Omer Erdogdular, Necati Celik, Yurdal Tokcan, Derya Turkan, Ross Daly, Zohar Fresco, Taiseer Elias, Nasseer Shamma and Mustafa Said.
He has now become a oud & maqam instructor at Codarts, Rotterdam University for the Arts since 2013.
His style and practice are rooted in Greek and Turkish music traditions but he has been always been motivated to research the world of Arabic oud & maqam and to adopt techniques and aesthetics coming from the contemporary modal music scene. He has a lot of experience performing a wide range of musical genres varying from old music (Ottoman, Baroque) to folk and contemporary improvised music.
He has performed worldwide with: Kudsi Erguner, L'Achéron/François Joubert-Caillet, Michalis Kouloumis, Ensemble Ibn Arabi, Rebetien, Neda, Christos Barbas, Alex Simu, Chris Jennings, Kemal Dinc, Ahmet Aslan, Cigdem Aslan, Robyn Shulkowsky and many more.
He has also collaborated with choreographer Lia Tsolaki, Greek Center of Folklore Studies, Theatre of the Shoe Under the Tree and the National Theatre of Greece.
He has given oud workshops in Labyrinth Catalunya as well in several locations in Europe. He has been teaching in the Experimental Music High Schools of Athens: Pallini, Alimos & Ilion.
