Sokratis Sinopoulos is a contemporary master of the Politiki lyra (kemençe). His prolific international collaborations have shown him to be comfortable within the traditions of Greece and Eastern Mediterranean, crossing over into jazz and classical music.
Sokratis studied Byzantine music and classical guitar as a child and began playing lyra in 1988, studying with Ross Daly. He joined Daly's group, Labyrinthos, a year later.
In 2010, he formed the Sokratis Sinopoulos Quartet. Their debut album, Eight Winds, was produced by Manfred Eicher for ECM records. They followed up in 2019 with their second album, Metamodal.
Sokratis Sinopoulos is an associate professor in the Department of Music Science and Art at the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece.
