Zacharias Spyridakis

Zacharias Spyridakis was born in Athens in 1971 and started learning Cretan lyra in 1980. In 1983, he started studying with lyra master, Kostas Mountakis, and received his degree from the Greek Conservatory of Athens in 1989.

In 1993, he helped form the Cretan ensemble, Palaiina Seferia, which released two successful albums. Since 2016, he has been collaborating and recording with G. Karapatakis & H. Hildenbrand in the Nenemia project.

He has performed in Greece and abroad (UK, America, Canada, Argentina, China, France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Germany, Luxembourg, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Egypt, Cyprus) and presented his work and Cretan Music on the radio and television shows. He has also collaborated with such composers, such as Vangelis Papathanassiou (Vangelis), Yannis Markopoulos, Steve Wood, and Jordi Savall. Zaharias has recorded numerous albums and film soundtracks, always pushing boundaries of traditional and contemporary, joining them in a unique marriage of traditional instruments with modern styles.

Zacharias has led seminars in Cretan lyra at the Labyrinth Musical Workshop in Crete for over a decade.
