Charis Laurijsen

Lavta, Bouzouki

Turkish, Greek

English

In Agios Nikolaos, his passion for the bouzouki started at an early age, and later led him to the Codarts Conservatory to complete his undergraduate studies in lavta. The study of makams led him to journey to Constantinople where he played along with Café Aman Istanbul and Tolgahan Çoğulu. He later completed his Master’s degree in Cretan lute and the lavta with a focus on improvisation techniques.

His projects include Laurijsen Brothers duo (variations on traditional Rembétiko songs), Mále Vráse (a more complete group of Rembétiko music which revived old tracks), Rosal Trio (original compositions), and the duo Lyrian Modus (new compositions with the traditional pair of Constantinople, lyra and lavta).

Now based in Athens, he imparts his knowledge to students in various locations.
