Giorgos Xylouris, or 'Psarogiorgis', as he is known in Crete, comes from Anogeia, a village with vibrant living traditions spanning many generations. Giorgos was influenced by his father and two uncles and played the mandolin and the laouto at the age of 11, accompanying his father at events all over Crete. Giorgos has worked with many musicians who were adept in Cretan music and other traditions. He founded the Xylouris Ensemble, which included musicians from the scene in Melbourne. After a residence of 8 years in Australia, Giorgos returned to Crete. He released recordings of duets with his uncle, as well as with Stelios Petrakis. In 2013, he formed Xylouris White, with Australian drummer Jim White. Their music incorporates Giorgos’ traditional background with contemporary elements.
