Giannis Koutis was born in 1985 in Nicosia, Cyprus and has amassed an extensive educational background, having studied the art of oud intesively in Athens with virtuoso soloist and composer, Haig Yazdjian. Giannis holds a diploma in Byzantine Ecclesiastical Music with distinction, and a degree with distinction in classical guitar at Pythagorio Conservatory in Athens. He was awarded the degree of ABRSM Grade 8 (UK), presented by well-known soloist and composer Costas Grigoreas. Additionally, he has studied Epirot Polyphonic singing at the Fivos Anogianakis Folk Instrument Museum of Athens. In 2016, Giannis completed his studies with a Masters of Music/Oud performance at Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam, where he studied under ney master, Kudsi Erguner, a UNESCO Artist for Peace.

Giannis has participated in several European music events, seminars and music festivals in Hong Kong, Qatar, Uzbekistan, Las Palmas, Venice, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Israel, Cyprus, and more. Not only does he perform as a soloist, but also in ensemble collaboration presenting both his and others’ compositions. He has shared the stage with world-renowned musicians, such as Kudsi Erguner, Ross Daly, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Giannis is currently a professional musician and teacher, giving workshops and concerts around the world, while also researching Modal Music of the Eastern Mediterranean.
