Description
Andalusian Music is the most cultured expression of the musical art of al-Andalus, the Muslim dynasty in southern Spain 711 - 1492. This course will focuses on Andalusi Music as preserved in Morocco, according to several approaches: - Historically, we will learn the story of Andalusi Music from its Arab pre-Islamic and Iberian origins to the present time. - Structurally, its internal structures and particular forms will be explained. - In the theoretical aspect, we will look at its melodic modal theory, its construction, and its functioning, along with the rhythms and different versions. We will also see the mechanisms of improvisation in two manifestations: the ornamentation of existing melodies and the creation of new melodies. We will learn traditional themes in different modes and rhythms, and how to interpret and ornament them. Finally, we will also explore improvisations -- both vocal and instrumental -- in the various modes of Andalusi Music.
