Description
This course will focus on traditional Greek songs based on pentatonic and other five-note modes, both rhythmic and unmetered. It will familiarize students with the use of microtones in modes from around Greece. We will examine odd meters, such as 5/4 and 7/8, along with simple meters like 4/4 and 8/8.
We will practice improvisation by using our voice to mimic the role of familiar solo instruments of this tradition such as the clarinet or the violin. We will also work on voice strengthening and breathing exercises.
This course is for students who are comfortable as vocalists, and have at least a basic familiarity with Greek vocal music. The repertoire for this course will focus on songs from Epirus, Pindos, the Dodecanese and other parts of Greece:
“Feggarorposopi” (Zagori) - “Φεγγαροπρόσωπη” (Ζαγόρι)
“Miroloi” - “Μοιρολόι”
