NOTE: This course, “Azerbaijani Mugham & Repertoire,” will be taught in Turkish / Azeri, with live translation to English.
This course will focus on the Azerbaijani modal system known as mugham. We will study its application in pieces from the Azerbaijani classical mugham repertoire, and other forms specific to the region.
We will study taksim (improvisation), and through this examine the seyir, or melodic movement patterns, specific to different mughams. We will practice ornamentation and other stylistic elements that define the Azerbaijani style of playing. While the reference in this course will be the kamancheh, it is open to all instruments. Students should be comfortable on their respective instruments, able to direct their attention to the specific nuances and language of this style.
