Description
This course will focus on improving general technique on the Arabic oud. We will begin with basic exercises, devoting generous detail to right-hand picking technique, and proceed to fingering exercises in chromatic, major and minor scales. We will focus on strengthening mechanics so as to better enunciate and perform compositions to enhance musicianship. This course is for students who have basic capabilities on the oud: they are able to hold it, tune it, and play simple scales. By the end of this course, you will have a better understanding of how to improve your technique and musicianship, how to achieve results in a steady and sustained manner, and how to consciously utilize different mechanics to elevate your playing. We will also dissect and deconstruct standard pieces in the Arabic repertoire, and examine how to properly express different maqams including Rast, Bayati, Hijaz, Huzzam and Saba.
