Description
In this course we will learn what radif, dastgah, makam, and gooshe are in Iranian music. We will discuss the makams presented in each dastgah of the radif to learn the modal structure of the makam and how the melody evolves from that structure. After elaborating on each dastgah we will listen to the highlights of significant performances of older master musicians from Iran, and compare them to what we have learned. § § Instructor Araz Salek will be playing tar during the course, and will provide feedback to other tar players. However, musicians playing any instrument capable of performing the microtones are welcome to join, as this is a course focused primarily on learning radif. All students should be comfortable on their instruments. In this course, students are expected to play and record music based on what they have understood of what was taught in each dastgah. Repertoire will include Davami's vocal radif and Mirza Abdollah's instrumental radif (narrated by Boroumand and transcribed by Talaei).
