Description
This course will focus on the kemençe in Ottoman classical music, as well as Turkish and Greek folk styles. We will examine some select makams, including Ussak, Huseyni, Kurdi and Nikriz, and select repertoire that derives from these. Through the repertoire, we will examine the theory of each makam, basic ornaments characteristic of the style, and improvisation (taksim). The Greek folk repertoire will acquaint us with a more rhythmical playing style.
For advanced kemençe students, this course will help clarify any questions or difficulties that have arisen during their training. This course will also be useful for self-taught kemençe players, as well as for players that are used to a different kind of kemençe – Cretan lyra, Bulgarian gudulka, or Pontic lyra, for example – and want to explore the style of the Istanbul kemençe.
