Description
This course will focus on the kemençe in Ottoman classical music, as well as in Turkish and Greek folk styles. For advanced kemençe students, we will help clarify questions and difficulties that have arisen during their studies. This course will also be useful for self-taught kemençe players, as well as for players of different kinds of lyra—Cretan lyra, Bulgarian gadulka, or Pontic lyra, for example—who want to explore the style of the Istanbul kemençe.
By the end of the this course, students will be able to: a) manage the sensitive area of the 2nd octave of the instrument through specific fingering position practices, b) determine and produce all the delicate ornaments characteristic to the style of the kemençe, and c) form more structured and complex improvisational phrases fit for taksims.
