Description
This course will focus on the music of Pontos and the Southern Black Sea region (Karadeniz). We will work on phrasing, ornamentation, and other technical parts. We will also look at the rhythmic elements of this music and the makams used.
Pieces from the classic repertoire of Pontos will be covered, including songs typically played on wind and string instruments, including zurna, bagpipe, flute, kemençe and oud. We will discuss rhythms in 5/8, 7/8, 2/4 and 9/8, discussing phrasing, inner rhythmic patterns, improvisation and more.
This course is for students who feel comfortable on their instruments, able to focus on the stylistic elements and repertoire specific to Pontic music, which is typically performed on the Pontic lyra. Students who attended the previous course are encouraged to join, as only a small amount of content will be repeated.
