Description
When it comes to ornamentation and phrasing, the bağlama saz possesses a unique character. This course will focus on implementing these characteristic techniques across a wider range of instruments and repertoire. We will also examine the role of the voice in influencing expression on other instruments. We will slowly and deeply analyze details of phrasing and ornamentation in the selected repertoire, exploring with the course participants how to successfully adapt this information to their instrument.
By applying the ornamentation techniques of the saz and the voice to other instruments, students will enrich their musical expressiveness and performativity, while widening their awareness of other musical traditions. This course is designed for all instrumentalists and singers looking to expand their knowledge and develop their skills using a repertoire of traditional pieces from Turkey and Greece. Tonalities of the pieces will be decided mainly based on the makam in question (ex. Ussak in La, Segah in Si.).
During the course, instructor Cihan Türkoğlu will provide a short video presentation for each lesson aiming to guide your practice. It will be an interactive course, following the level, interest and need of the students, and the instructor is open to hearing students’ interests before and during the course. The repertoire we will cover includes “Kütahya’nın Pınarları,” “Havada Durna Sesi,” “Estergon Kalesi,” “Tin Patrida M’ehasa,” “Tavas Zeybeği,” “Gül Kuruttum,” and “Qubar Yaré Esmeré.”
