This course will cover the fundamentals of violin technique in Turkish makam. We will work on exercises for left and right hand techniques, focusing on ornamentation and articulation. We will use classical Ottoman pieces, as well as traditional Turkish and Greek pieces to study the makam system, concentrating on the intervals, articulation and phrasing basics.
We will study the Segah, Eviç, Hüzzâm and Müstear makamlar, analyzing the melodic development of these in the selected repertoire. We will also study the rhythmic elements of these pieces, and become familiar with several time signatures of the Eastern Mediterranean region.
This course is appropriate for students who are comfortable on their violins or other bowed instruments, but coming from a different musical background, eager to explore Eastern Mediterranean music and the specific styles of the region.
By the end of this course, you will be familiar with the fundamental elements of makam theory, and understand their direct correlation with performance in order to develop creativity beyond the score.
