Eastern Mediterranean music is full of compound time signatures, and 9/8 is undoubtedly one of the most popular of the region. Variations of 9/8 are widely found in areas such as Thrace, Macedonia, Asia Minor, Pontos, Epirus, the Aegean and Cyprus.
We will study the Karsilama, Adikrystos, Syngathistos, Zeybek and Aptaliko rhythms, all of which are 9/8. We will look at specific pieces for each, paying attention to local idioms and stylistic elements that appear in this repertoire.
This course is for students who are comfortable on their instruments, and thus able to focus on repertoire and more subtle stylistic details.
