Description
This course will cover the fundamentals of violin technique in Turkish makam. We will work on exercises for left and right hand techniques, focusing on ornamentation and articulation. The repertoire to be studied is drawn from the classical Ottoman music, as well as the traditions of Turkey and Greece and will allow as to approach the makam system, concentrating on the intervals, articulation and phrasing basics.
We will study the Saba, Karciğar, Nevruz-Rumi and Dugah makams, analyzing the melodic development of these in the selected repertoire. We will also study the rhythmic elements of these pieces, become familiar with several time signatures from the Eastern Mediterranean region and approach the element of taksim (instrumental improvisation).
This course is appropriate for students who are comfortable on their violins or other bowed instruments. We welcome those coming from different musical backgrounds who are eager to explore Eastern Mediterranean music and the specific styles of the region.
By the end of this course, you will be familiar with the fundamental elements of makam theory, and understand their direct correlation with performance in order to develop creativity beyond the score.
