Description
This course will cover the fundamentals of violin technique in Turkish makam. We will work on exercises for left and right hand technique, focusing on ornamentation and articulation. The repertoire will be drawn from classical Ottoman music as well as other traditions of Turkey and Greece. The pieces will allow us to approach the makam system, concentrating on intervals, articulation, and phrasing basics.
We will study several makams, analyzing their melodic development via the selected repertoire. We will also study the rhythmic elements of these pieces and become familiar with time signatures from the Eastern Mediterranean region. Finally, we will approach taksim (instrumental improvisation).
This course is appropriate for students who are comfortable on their violins or other bowed instruments. We welcome those coming from different musical backgrounds who are eager to explore Eastern Mediterranean music and the specific styles of the region.
By the end of this course, you will be familiar with the fundamental elements of makam theory and understand their direct correlation with performance in order to develop creatively beyond the score.
