Taksim Development, Phrasing & Ornamentation
with Danai Loukidi
- Greek, Turkish
- All Instruments

Description
Taksim is non-metrical improvisation, as it appears in the modal music system of Makam. But, is taksim a free improvisation? How does it develop? Is there a structure, or are there rules that we should follow? And how can someone develop and extend those skills?
This course will examine the melodic development, phrasing, and ornamentation of taksim. We will use exercises to understand the seyir (path) of selected makams, and to enrich our ornamentation. We will also analyse taksims of great masters of this music, and develop techniques to extend the phrasing.
Our goal will be for the students to understand the direct correlation of theory with performance, in order to become creative beyond the score and to express themselves through improvisation.
This course is appropriate for students who are comfortable on their instruments. We welcome those coming from different musical backgrounds who are eager to explore Eastern Mediterranean music and the subtle stylistic details of the region.
