Description
This course will focus on the instrumental compositions of the later Ottoman period, from the 18th till the 20th century. This period of Ottoman music is considered to be when instrumental music reached its zenith. Many of the prominent composers of Ottoman music such as Nayi Osman Dede, Tanburi Osman Bey, Salih Dede, Tanburi Cemil Bey and Şerif Muhittin Targan were alive in this era. We will learn about the culture and perspective of these musicians, who lived in Istanbul.
This course is for kemençe players who are very comfortable with their instruments and already familiar with some repertoire, as this course will not focus on instrumental technique. The repertoire for this course includes “Rast Peşrev” and “Segah Saz Semaisi” by Nayi Osman Dede, “Acemaşiran Peşrev” by Salih Dede Efendi, “Ferahfeza Saz Semaisi” by Şerif Muhiddin Targan, “Saba Peşrev” by Tanburi Osman Bey, and “Suzidilara Saz Semaisi” by Cemil Bey. Through these compositions, we will learn about the style and character of peşrev and saz semai song forms, as well as various makams, such as Segah, Saba, Ferahfeza, Acemaşiran, Rast, and Suzidilara.
