Description
This course will focus on compositions and repertoire of Ottoman and Turkish urban art music. We will examine compositions through the prism of modal analysis, so that the student will better understand this music, and be able to utilize this new knowledge within the context of improvisations (taksim). The course is aimed at all musicians who play instruments capable of reproducing microtonal intervals of this specific tradition (including singers), who are interested in this specific musical genre, or who are interested in acquiring a deeper understanding of makam, given that it is central to the composition and interpretation of many other musical traditions which present a similar modal logic.
