This course will focus on qanun technique of early 20th century Egypt. We will devote significant attention to correct hand positioning, and will survey ten different plucking techniques specific to the Egyptian style of qanun playing, including finger methods for modulating (‘afq), tremolo (firdaj), grupetto and more.
We will focus on short preludes, called dulabs, that introduce the maqam of a piece. Specifically, we will look at four dulabs from the Egyptian/Ottoman repertoire of the 19th century. We will also cover the following maqams: Rast, Bayati, Hijaz, Nahawand, and depending on the pace of the course, we may add Sika, Saba, Hijazkar, and Jiharkah.
