Description
Traditional music of Crete rests on simple, profound forms which lend to it a sound both primordial and immediate. These foundational aspects balanced precisely and delicately. If this balance is lost, all of the tradition's magic is lost with it. So it is critical for whoever wishes to delve into this music to pass through a specific, austere training regimen, devoting considerable attention to minute details and movements, as it is precisely these details that impart the music's unique color and character. Giorgos Xylouris, perhaps more than any other contemporary Cretan artist, has immersed himself for decades in the intricacies of Cretan music. As a result, his playing demonstrates both timelessness and balance. In this seminar he will share his knowledge and experience, not only to share the melodies and forms, but also to impart the simple, fundamental details which are crucial to the authentic and idiomatic sound of this tradition.
