Description
This course will serve as an introduction to the Cretan laouto, devoting attention to the minute details, movements and balance that give Cretan traditional music its unique idiomatic character. This course is for beginner students that have elemental familiarity with the laouto, able to hold and tune the instrument correctly and produce basic scales. We will focus heavily on right hand technique: how to properly hold a pick and recreate the correct sound and rhythmic nuance of the Cretan laouto. This course will initiate the student into a training regimen meant to strengthen understanding of idiosyncrasies in this music. The repertoire of this course includes syrta “Galoudianos Syrtos”, a variation of “Chaniotikos Syrtos” and Syrto tis Nychtas, kondylies “Anogeianes Kondylies,” tambahaniotiko “Oso varoun ta sidera”, rizitiko “Omorfonion ezigonen” and a maleviziotis dance. We will learn the basic melodic phrases, as well as a few variations for each phrase. We will touch on accompanying the rizitiko vocals with chords, as well as the first two phrases of the maleviziotis dance.
