Description
This course will focus on improvisation in the raga system. To establish a basis of understanding of this music, we will cover four different ragas for different times of day: “Raga Bhairav” (morning), “Raga Brindavani Sarang” (mid-day), “Raga Puriya Dhanashree” (evening), and “Raga Malkauns” (night). For each raga, we will cover two to three compositions. We will also study the talas (rhythmic cycles). These include Rupak tal (7 beats), Jhaptal (10 beats), Ektal (12 beats), and Teental (16 beats).
This course is open to all instruments. Students should be comfortable on their respective instruments, and ideally have some basic familiarity with Hindustani music. We will approach this subject with both our instruments and voices.
