This course will focus on improvisation in the raga system. To establish a basis of understanding of this music, we will cover four different ragas for different times of day: “Raga Bhairav” (morning), “Raga Brindavani Sarang” (mid-day), “Raga Puriya Dhanashree” (evening), and “Raga Malkauns” (night). For each raga, we will cover two to three compositions. We will also study the talas (rhythmic cycles). These include Rupak tal (7 beats), Jhaptal (10 beats), Ektal (12 beats), and Teental (16 beats).
This course is open to all instruments. Students should be comfortable on their respective instruments, and ideally have some basic familiarity with Hindustani music. We will approach this subject with both our instruments and voices.
TIME CHANGES: This course's schedule includes a transition to/from Daylight Saving Time (aka Summer Time), which may mean that the class times will vary for you. Please check the schedule carefully, so you don't miss anything.
