Description
This course will be an immersive experience in the maqamat of the Rast family, as practiced in the Egyptian and Syrian traditions. We will explore all of the ajnas and sayr pathways within the maqam family. We will also learn the melodic vocabulary used in improvisation and composition through call-and-response singing/playing of short melodic phrases. Finally we will analyze a number of songs to understand how the maqam is articulated.
This course is open to students at any level who sing or play any instrument. As instructor Sami Abu Shumays's perspective on maqam is one that people are only gradually becoming familiar with, he has found that advanced practitioners as well as total beginners tend to benefit equally from these classes.
We will cover maqam Rast and other other members of the maqam family, including the maqamat Suznak, Nairuz, Suzdalar, Dalanshin, Kirdan, Sazkar, and Mahur. We will not learn complete pieces, however we will listen to and analyze 10-15 different pieces throughout the course.
