This course will focus on Armenian traditional and classical music. We will study the use of makam in this music, as well as improvisation. This course will be taught on duduk, and the instructor will cover instrumental technique, however students who do not have a duduk and wish to learn Armenian repertoire are welcome to join on their respective instruments.
Students should possess some level of instrumental technique and improvisational ability, though not necessarily in the Armenian tradition. Repertoire will be taught either by ear or score, depending on student needs. Pieces will include “Sareri Hovin Mernem,” “Nubar Nubar,” “Amen Aravot,” “Dun im Musan es,” “Kamancha,” “Naz Par,” “Shalakho,” “Lusnyak Gisher,” and “Yes Lsetzi Mi Anush Dzayn.”
