Description
This course will focus on instrumental improvisation known as taksim. We will learn both technique and stylistic elements, studying new and historical recordings of oud taksims, as well as some played on kanun, violin, and ney. We will examine both Turkish and Arabic styles, as well as the potential to combine them. Finally, we will look at how to use phrases and other elements from a musical piece to color a taksim, addressing specific techniques involved in the process.
This course is for students who are comfortable on the oud, able to focus on stylistic elements as opposed to basic mechanics. We will cover the following makams: Rast, Uşşâk, Hüseynî, Sabâ, Hicâz, Hüzzâm, Nihâvend and Muhayyer.
Note: this course will not be recorded live - the daily class material will be recorded and uploaded by the instructor on the course page as appropriate.
