Description
This course will focus on songs of different styles and regions in Turkey, as well as from neighboring cultures in Azerbaijan, Iran and Kurdistan.
This course is for students with some singing experience, as well as a basic knowledge of Anatolian styles and repertoire. We will focus on details and ornaments that characterize these vocal styles and look at the lyrical meanings. We will also cover the anatomy of the voice, and learn exercises to strengthen and enhance vocal capabilities.
By the end of this course, you will be able to recognize the elements of your voice, identify vocal anatomy, and be able to differentiate between and appreciate the unique characteristics of different vocal styles. Repertoire will include pieces from mystical traditions such as the Alevi, as well as folk songs - pieces include “Suda Balık Yan Gider,” “Hangi Bağın Bağbanısan Gülüsen,” “Ada Sahillerinde Bekliyorum,” and “Izmir'in Kavakları.”
