Description

This course will focus on songs of different styles and regions in Turkey, as well as from neighboring cultures in Azerbaijan, Iran and Kurdistan.
 
This course is for students who are familiar with the elementary mechanics of singing. Basic knowledge of Anatolian styles and repertoire is a plus. We will focus on details and ornaments that characterize these vocal styles and look at the lyrical meanings. We will also cover the anatomy of the voice, and learn exercises to strengthen and enhance vocal capabilities.
 
By the end of this course, you will be able to recognize the elements of your voice, identify vocal anatomy, and be able to differentiate between and appreciate the unique characteristics of different vocal styles. The course repertoire will aim to cover the following songs, as pace allows:

1. “Suzan suzi” (Turkish) 
2. “Altın tasta gül kuruttum” (Turkish)
3. “Seyran mangi” (Kurdish)
4. “Gulnîşan” (Kurdish)
5. “Araz üste buz üste” (Azeri) 
6. “Sırdır” (Turkish - composed by Metin Kemal Kahraman)
