Description
This course will teach basic kanun techniques, both traditional and contemporary. We will focus on achieving a clear and steady sound through exercises meant to enforce correct plucking technique. We will assess proper hand placement, particularly in relation to different rhythms.
We will put these techniques into practice via a select repertoire of Turkish, Ottoman and Greek music, focusing on the basic makams (modes) and rhythms in these traditions. This will include “Mikrasiatiki Hora” (Nikriz), “Karsilamas Mytilinis” (Hüseyni), “Hicaz Makedon” (Hicaz), “Rast Semai” by Cemil Beşir, and a makelaikos, zeibekiko, and hasaposerviko. This course is for students who have basic knowledge of the kanun, able to tune and handle their instrument, and produce sound. By the end of this course, you will be able to read beyond the score and ornament melodies to adapt a piece for solo kanun performance.
