Description
This course will teach basic kanun techniques - both traditional and contemporary. We will focus on achieving a clear and steady sound through exercises meant to enforce correct plucking technique. We will assess proper hand placement, particularly in relation to different rhythms.
We will put these techniques into practice via a select repertoire of music from Asia Minor, focusing on the basic makams and rhythms of this tradition. This will include “Mikrasiatiki Hora” (Nikriz), “Mia Smirnia Sto Parathiri” (Hicaz), “Kanarini Mou Gliko” (Rast) and “Belalis” (Hicaz). This course is for students who have basic knowledge of the kanun, able to tune and handle their instrument, and produce sound. By the end of this course, you will be able to read beyond the score and ornament melodies to adapt a piece for solo kanun performance.
