Description
This course will focus on the dastgah modal system of Iranian music. It will look specifically at the Homayoun dastgah and its branch Avaz-e-Esfahan. We will explore their structures, and through playing and analyzing pieces, we will be able to understand how the Dastgah and Avaz are articulated. At the end of the course, we will attempt to compose pieces based on what we've learned and try to improvise in free rhythm.
This course is for all musicians who have some capability on their instrument, but not necessarily any knowledge of Persian music. We'll cover one or two pieces in each class. For the first four classes, we will focus on Homayoun, playing some old pieces, as well as some by Ali-Akbar Shahnazi, Faramarz Payvar, Jalil Shahnaz and more. For the second half of the course, we'll cover more old pieces as well as pieces composed by Morteza Mahjoubi, Abolhasan Saba, Darvish Khan and more. Through the course we will look at different vocal and instrumental Radifs as well.
